Blackbee AI is now in Australia: what Peppol eInvoicing means for your finance team
Blackbee AI is now in Australia. Here's what Peppol eInvoicing means for your finance team, and what still needs doing once an invoice arrives.
We've got some news. Blackbee AI is now live in Australia.
If you run finance at a mid-market business here, you've probably noticed that the way invoices move is changing. The federal government has put its weight behind eInvoicing, and more suppliers are getting set up on Peppol every month.
So what does that mean for your team day to day? And where does Blackbee AI fit in?
Put simply, invoices are about to get a lot easier to receive. Deciding what to do with them is still your team's job. That's the part we want to take off your plate.
Why Blackbee AI is launching in Australia now
Timing matters. Australia is in the middle of a real shift in how businesses exchange invoices, and the government is leading it.
The federal government has made eInvoicing the default for Commonwealth procurement. Non-corporate Commonwealth entities had to process at least 30% of the invoices they receive through eInvoicing by 1 July 2026. By December 2026, they need to be able to send and process eInvoices automatically.
Why should a private business care about a government deadline? Because government agencies buy from a lot of suppliers. When those suppliers get set up on Peppol to keep their government customers happy, they don't switch it off for everyone else. Sooner or later, they'll start sending eInvoices to you too.
That's exactly the moment we wanted to be here for.
What is Peppol eInvoicing?
Peppol is an international framework for sending invoices and other business documents between organisations as structured data. In Australia, the ATO is the Australian Peppol Authority.
Here's the easiest way to picture it. A PDF invoice is like a photo of a receipt. A person (or a capture tool) has to look at it and work out what it says. A Peppol eInvoice is more like a form where every box is already labelled: supplier, ABN, invoice number, PO reference, line items, GST and total. Software can read it straight away.
And your supplier doesn't need to use the same Peppol provider as you. Each business connects through its own service provider, often called an Access Point, and the network handles the rest. It works a bit like email. You can be on Gmail and still get a message from someone on Outlook.
What's happening with eInvoicing in Australia right now?
Here's where things stand:
- Federal government: eInvoicing is the default for Commonwealth procurement, with a 30% target by 1 July 2026 and automated sending and processing by December 2026.
- The ATO: it's the Australian Peppol Authority for the network here.
- Business-to-business: eInvoicing is voluntary. Nobody can make your suppliers send you a Peppol invoice yet.
- Suppliers to government: they have a clear reason to get Peppol-ready now.
Put simply, the government has set the direction, and the rest of the market is following at its own pace. That means most finance teams will be handling a mix of Peppol invoices and PDFs for quite a while.
What Peppol fixes, and what's still on your plate
Let's give Peppol its credit first. When an invoice comes through Peppol:
- the data arrives clean and structured
- nobody has to retype it or squint at a scan
- supplier identifiers and PO references come in as proper fields
- it can travel between different providers and systems without a hitch
So what happens once it lands? This is where a lot of teams get caught out. Peppol is a delivery network, and its job ends when the invoice reaches you. Someone on your team still has to:
- confirm it came from a supplier you actually work with
- check it against the purchase order, line by line
- make sure it hasn't already been paid (maybe it came by email last week too)
- get it in front of the right approver
- post it to the ERP correctly
Think of Peppol like a really good courier. The parcel turns up on time and in one piece. Whether it's what you ordered is still yours to check.
How a Peppol invoice gets from your supplier to your ERP
Here's the journey, step by step:
- 1.Your supplier creates the invoice in their own accounting or ERP system and sends it through their Peppol provider.
- 2.The Peppol network finds your business by its business identifier (usually your ABN) and delivers the invoice to your provider.
- 3.Your provider passes the invoice straight to Blackbee AI.
- 4.Blackbee AI reads the structured data and maps it into the same invoice format it uses for every other channel.
- 5.Blackbee AI's agents run your checks and send the invoice for approval.
- 6.The approved bill posts to your ERP, such as Sage Intacct.
Steps 1 to 3 are Peppol's job. Steps 4 to 6 are where Blackbee AI comes in.
What Blackbee AI does once the invoice lands
Blackbee AI is an agentic Intake-to-Pay platform, and it puts procurement at the forefront. Our specialist AI agents pick up spend intent at its source (emails, Teams chats and so on), sort out invoices, match them against purchase orders and contracts, and route approvals. They handle everything else in between too, right up until clean, structured data lands in your ERP.
Peppol invoices slot right into that flow. The data's already structured, so there's nothing to extract. Our agents go straight to the part that needs judgment. Does this invoice match what was ordered? Is it ready to approve?
Of course, all of this is within your explicit control. You choose what Blackbee AI handles, and it does only that, and does it well.
Want our agents to match and flag invoices but leave approvals with your team? That's fine. Want them to take on more as you get comfortable? That's fine too. You set the boundaries, and you can see what every agent did and why.
What about suppliers who aren't on Peppol yet?
Good question, and an important one. B2B eInvoicing is voluntary in Australia, so plenty of your suppliers will keep emailing PDFs for a while. Some may never switch.
That's okay. Blackbee AI brings in invoices from email and PDF as well, and they go through the same checks and approvals as your Peppol invoices. You run one process for all of them. Your suppliers don't have to change a thing to keep getting paid.
There's a nice bonus here too. Sometimes a supplier sends the same invoice through Peppol and by email. Blackbee AI's duplicate checks look across both, so the second copy gets flagged before anyone pays it twice.
Is Blackbee AI a good fit for your team?
Blackbee AI is built for mid-market finance teams, usually organizations with somewhere between 200 and 2,500 employees that run ERPs like Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Workday.
It's a good fit if:
- your team still keys in invoice data or chases approvals by email
- you're starting to receive Peppol invoices, or expect to soon
- you want more control over spend before it hits the ledger
- You'd like one process for every invoice, whatever channel it comes through
And your ERP stays exactly where it is. Blackbee AI works above it, so you keep the system of record you already trust.
Ready to see it in action?
